That helped my decision.” It also helped that on that first visit, she saw a resident in the hallway with her dog, and knew Oreo would be at home. Keep smiling Mimi was born in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia and went to West Catholic before earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Villanova.

Gus Santos – Jenner’s Pond

Gus Santos and his wife, Inge, have lived outside the US and traveled to many countries and states in the US. They looked at retirement living in Florida and in the mid-Atlantic. Ultimately, the couple chose Jenner’s Pond. “We had a trial period in one of the apartments here and visited the cottages and had meals with the community,” Gus recalls. “The cottages were a nice size. The other places we had visited were about half the size.”

George & Jessie Hellhake – Simpson Meadows

George and Jessie Hellhake have lived in a lot of different places. Before moving to Simpson Meadows in late 2021, they had spent 16 years in a large 55-plus community in central Florida—but it was far from their three sons and their families—six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. “Our children asked us to move closer,” says the couple, who have reconnected with friends from their days of living in Downingtown and Eagle.

Loretta Maley – Simpson House

The staff is empathetic and they listen.” Although Loretta Maley had driven past Simpson House for 50 years, she didn’t get to know and appreciate what it offered until after her husband passed. We have been super comfortable here.” Hugh and Linda Wyles loved their 55-plus community. “But rather than waiting until we are 80,” they said to each other, “let’s move in our 70s and meet people.” So, in January 2022, they moved to an independent living apartment in the Ewing Building overlooking the gardens at Jenner’s Pond.

Anne Adams – Jenner’s Pond

The cost is affordable, but the community is upscale.” Staying sharp by staying active When Anne Adams moved to Jenner’s Pond in November 2022, she noticed that the in-house Morrie’s Pub was closed on Saturday nights. Recognizing that Saturday can be a lonely night for single people, she volunteered to tend bar to make sure it stayed open.

Freda Egnal – Simpson House

“There is lots of diversity here, which I find very attractive. The residents are friendly and interesting. ” Dedicated to making a difference Freda Egnal has social justice in her genes. In the 1930s, her parents helped unionize Philadelphia teachers. Freda had a long career as a social worker and community organizer, and for 40 years served as a block captain and committee person for West Philadelphia’s 46th Ward. “I love being involved in activities and organizations that make the world a better place,” says Freda. “I got very engaged with the people I worked with and made an impact.”

Barbara Donaldson – Simpson Meadows
