Jim & Joy Patton – Jenner’s Pond

When Jim and Joy Patton decided it was time to move from a 55-plus community, they chose Jenner’s Pond. The couple was looking for a continuing care retirement community, with personal care, healthcare and wellness programs, as well as any other assistance they might need. They moved into a cottage here in July 2020, just a few months after the start of the pandemic.

“My apartment here is my safe and happy place.” The leader of a chair yoga class asked participants to close their eyes and visualize a space where they feel calm and happy and safe. “The place that came into my mind almost unbidden was my apartment here at Simpson House,” says Mary Lynn Williams, who moved to the community in June 2022 after spending two pandemic years with her daughter and son-in-law in Italy. “My apartment is mine. “There are many great activities here.” Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, Sharon Silverman was always active. She and her younger sister went roller skating and bike riding. In high school, Sharon played intramural sports, archery and bowling. As an adult, she believes that exercise is key to aging well.

Sue Taylor – Simpson Meadows

“I’ve been here 23 years and I wouldn’t be anyplace else.” As members of the Methodist Church, Sue Taylor and her husband, David, were involved in Simpson Meadows when the community first started. “My husband was on the panel for the community because of his experience in heating and electric,” she says. She was asked to participate to provide the women’s perspective. They were among the first 50 residents in the community. She is one of five of those original residents still living in the community.

Vera DeShields – Simpson House

“I love all the staff here… always smiling and friendly.” When Vera DeShields’ son, Charles, persuaded her to move back to Philadelphia to be closer to his Drexel Hill home, she looked at Simpson House, where her aunt is a resident. She liked the location and the availability of different levels of care should she need them. “Having been in healthcare, I know how things can go when you get older,” says Vera, who now lives in an apartment in the community’s historic Olde Main building. “They have the services and programs to meet my needs.” She also became friendly
